A debate that mentioned real family issues

Advocates for children and families were impressed that the presidential debate held this week actually brought up issues of child care and family economic security. The often tense exchange didn’t just generate the instant-meme “binders full of women,” but also some meaningful discussion of issues facing real families.

Our friends at MomsRising.org, a grassroots force of socially conscious mom bloggers, celebrated a victory for their months of work raising the profile of family issues, declaring “We used our outside voices and it worked! This morning, our country is finally talking about the issue of fair pay for women and other critical family economic security policies.”

Meanwhile, Wonkblog, the Washington Post’s in-depth policy blog, dug into the numbers used by both candidates. Blogger Ezra Klein tracks the claims about immigration, unemployment and more that otherwise could become disinformation or disappear into the ether. Both blogs are important reads on the debate.
