DREAM Act: “A worthy bill”

Our friends at First Focus this week pointed out a great Wall Street Journal op-ed about the importance of passing the DREAM Act (subscription needed).  The bill would remove barriers to success for thousands of hard-working students; read our take on the bill here and see a great op-ed by our Utah member here.

From the article:

“Restrictionists dismiss the Dream Act as an amnesty that rewards people who entered the country illegally. But the bill targets individuals brought here by their parents as children. What is to be gained by holding otherwise law-abiding young people, who had no say in coming to this country, responsible for the illegal actions of others? The Dream Act also makes legal status contingent on school achievement and military service, the type of behavior that ought to be encouraged and rewarded.”

The General Welfare clause of the US Constitution says these benefits should not be provided to either citizens or non-citizens. It’s not about restricting “rewards”to kids. It’s about forcing tax payers with the gun of government to pay for others’ education. It is an immoral perversion of the proper role of government. Signed, A proud Utah parent!
