There’s early care for all D.C. kids; now to make it better

Our D.C. member, D.C. Action for Children, announced recently that the District has reached an important milestone for education: “There are enough preschool and Pre-K slots for every 3- and 4-year-old child seeking a spot.” This is a great achievement, and as we’ve said before, the early years need more investment.

The challenge now is to make sure that all these early child services are high quality. This is a key question, as Pre-K and other programs that lack rigor can actually be worse than no service at all, research has shown. “The fact is that early education in the District is still a very mixed bag,” writes HyeSook Chung, executive director of D.C. Action for Children. Get timely updates on education and more by following D.C. Action for Children on Twitter!
