“In a state that’s broke, money for kids’ programs often gets broken”
Voices for Illinois Children’s Leadership Community in the northwestern suburbs of Chicago hosted a Kids Count symposium which drew 100 people, including two local mayors, and featured two state legislators for a panel. The KIDS COUNT event provided the opportunity for legislators to hear how the data in their communities point to the need for increased funding for early childhood education and other critical children’s services that are being cut as a result of the state’s budget crisis.
Voices for Illinois Children’s founding president, Jerry Stermer, now the acting director of the Governor’s Office of Management and Budget, set the stage by reminding the panelists and audience that kids do well when families do well and families do well when they have strong communities that can support them.
