In NYC, nearly 17,000 kids could lose child care; child advocates rally

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg plans to cut nearly 17,000 child care slots on top of the 14,000 that were eliminated since 2006. Taking away child care from almost 17,000 children would be bad enough, but this move will also have economic consequences: many parents will have to leave their jobs at a time of already high unemployment.

Child advocates, including our New York member Citizens’ Committee for Children, have banded together to protect child care. The Emergency Coalition to Save Child Care is gathering advocates to demand that New York City not make short-sighted cuts. You can even use their forms to email the mayor and the city council.
