School nutrition bill could get another chance
Congress was close to reauthorizing the nation’s child nutrition programs before it left for the election. That reauthorization is still necessary in order to get our kids healthier and more available meals. The Washington Post reveals today that the nutrition bill’s second chance may be upon us.
At the heart of controversy over the bill has been a proposal by the Senate to fund it by taking money out of food stamps. Many nutrition advocates have likened this to a Sophie’s choice: should we bolster child nutrition by taking from food stamps, even when the two programs serve many of the same families?
