The Fleecing of Foster Children

Child welfare agencies are unfairly confiscating the government benefits of foster youth, according to a very important new report from one of our California child advocates. The Children’s Advocacy Institute shows in their report, “The Fleecing of Foster Children,” that state agencies typically take control of the Social Security benefits many foster youth are entitled to (often due to a disability or a death in the family).

The states justify confiscating the benefits of foster youth by saying they need the money to provide foster services. But one Congressman, Rep. Pete Stark (D-Calif.), has already said that he will use the report to as the basis for new legislation to protect foster children, who already face innumerable obstacles in their lives.
